Subscriber

A subscriber is someone who has opted in to receive content from you on a recurring basis, by email, on a platform, or through a paid membership.

The word covers three different relationships with three different values. A platform subscriber costs nothing and can be taken away; an email subscriber is portable and free; a paying subscriber is portable and generates recurring revenue. Reporting them as one number obscures which business you actually have.

Recurring revenue changes what you optimise. With one-off sales you chase new buyers; with subscriptions you chase retention, and a small monthly churn compounds into a large annual loss.

Active subscribers, not total subscribers, is the number worth tracking — most lists contain a substantial share of addresses that have not opened anything in a year.

In practice

5% monthly churn on 400 paying subscribers means replacing 240 people a year just to stand still.

Common mistake

Reporting total subscribers as audience size. Without an activity window, the figure only grows and never informs.
