Audience

Also called following

An audience is the group of people who have chosen to receive what you publish, on platforms you rent or channels you own.

The distinction that matters is ownership. Followers on a platform are reachable only while that platform chooses to show your posts to them, and it changes that choice constantly and without notice. Email and SMS subscribers are reachable because you hold the address.

This is why the sector's most repeated advice — build an email list — survives every trend cycle. It is not that email performs better per message; it is that email cannot be switched off by someone else's product decision.

Size is the least informative attribute of an audience. Specificity, recency and whether you can contact them directly all predict revenue better.

In practice

An account losing organic reach after an algorithm change keeps every one of its 4,000 email subscribers.

Common mistake

Counting platform followers as an owned asset. The relationship is real; the access to it is rented.
