Monetization is turning an audience into revenue, through advertising, sponsorship, direct sales, subscriptions or services.
Every monetization route trades reach against margin. Platform advertising monetises the largest audience at the lowest rate per person. Sponsorship pays more per person and requires a brand to want your specific audience. Direct sales pay the most per person and require you to have something to sell and someone willing to buy it from you.
Because the routes have different failure modes, holding two or three at once is a stability decision rather than a greed one. Ad rates fall seasonally, sponsorship budgets vanish in downturns, product sales depend on your own launches. They rarely fail in the same quarter.
The sequence matters too: most creators can sell something to a small audience long before that audience is large enough to interest an advertiser.
In practice
10,000 engaged followers might yield a few euros of ad revenue, a few hundred from one sponsorship, or a few thousand from a €40 product bought by 2% of them.
Common mistake
Waiting for scale before monetising. Direct sales work at audience sizes where advertising revenue is still negligible.
