Also called content creator
A creator is someone who publishes original content to an audience they built directly, and who typically earns from that audience rather than from an employer.
The word replaced "influencer" for a reason. "Influencer" describes what the audience is for — being influenced, usually on behalf of a brand. "Creator" describes what the person does, and it accommodates the growing share whose income comes from selling their own work rather than promoting someone else's.
The distinction has commercial consequences. A creator with products has revenue that survives a bad sponsorship quarter; one whose entire income is brand deals is a freelancer with a single, seasonal client type.
In practice most people sit on a spectrum between the two, and the healthiest positions hold several income types at once.
In practice
An illustrator who takes commissions, sells brushes, and occasionally does a paid collaboration has three income lines with different failure modes.
Common mistake
Building income on brand deals alone. It is the fastest revenue to start and the first to disappear when advertising budgets tighten.
