Also called automated DM, conversational agent
A chatbot is an automated conversational agent that answers common questions without a human present.
For a creator the realistic use is narrow and valuable: answering the same five questions at three in the morning, sending a promised file, or qualifying an enquiry before it reaches a real conversation.
What it does badly is anything requiring judgement. A bot that cannot say "I don't know, here is a human" turns a small problem into a bad experience, and the person leaves with an impression of the brand rather than of the tool.
Automated direct messages on social platforms sit in a grey area: most platforms restrict unsolicited automation, and aggressive use is a common cause of account restrictions.
In practice
A bot that replies to "where do I buy?" with a direct product link recovers sales that a delayed answer would have lost.
Common mistake
Hiding the human escape route. Every automated flow needs an obvious way out, or it traps the people most likely to buy.
