Community management

Community management is the ongoing work of replying, moderating and hosting conversation around an account or a group.

It is the difference between an audience and a community. An audience receives; a community talks — to you and to each other — and that second conversation is what keeps people present when your posting slows.

Most of the work is unglamorous and compounding: replying early to comments, answering the same question patiently, removing the small number of people who make others uncomfortable. Response speed in the first hour does more for a post's distribution than most creative decisions.

It also does not scale linearly, which is the honest constraint. Beyond a certain size, the choice is between fewer, deeper spaces and a broadcast relationship with everyone.

In practice

Replying to every comment in the first hour lifts a post's distribution and is the cheapest intervention available to a small account.

Common mistake

Treating comments as a metric rather than a conversation. Unanswered comments train an audience that talking to you is pointless.
