Also called DM
A direct message is a private one-to-one message on a social platform, as opposed to a public comment or post.
For creators the inbox is frequently where money is actually made. Public content creates interest; the private conversation converts it, particularly for services, coaching and anything expensive enough to require reassurance.
It is also unmanageable at scale, and that constraint is the whole design problem. Past a few dozen a day, the choice is between templated replies that feel templated and a booking link that moves the conversation somewhere structured.
Unsolicited outbound messaging is the fastest way to be reported, and platforms restrict accounts for it long before recipients complain.
In practice
Replying to a comment publicly, then answering the follow-up in a direct message, converts far better than either alone.
Common mistake
Pitching in the first message. It reads as automation even when a human typed it, and it costs the conversation.
