Also called intro call, fit call
A discovery call is a short introductory conversation used to establish whether a prospective client and a service are a fit before anything is sold.
Its purpose is qualification in both directions. The provider learns whether the problem is one they can solve; the client learns whether this is someone they want to work with. Treating it as a sales pitch defeats both and produces clients who leave early.
Short is better. Fifteen to twenty minutes forces the important questions forward and costs little when the answer is no, which it often should be.
A short intake form before the call does most of the qualifying. It also filters out bookings made on impulse, which are the ones that do not show up.
In practice
A three-question form before a 20-minute call — budget range, timeline, what has been tried — removes most of the calls that were never going to convert.
Common mistake
Offering unlimited free calls. Time spent on unqualified prospects is the largest hidden cost in a service business.
