Also called search engine optimisation

SEO is the practice of making pages easier for search engines to find, understand and rank, in order to earn traffic without paying for placement.

Three layers do the work. Technical SEO makes pages reachable and readable — crawlability, speed, markup. Content SEO makes them worth ranking — answering a real question better than the pages currently ranking. Off-page SEO reflects reputation, mostly through links from other sites.

Its economics are the reason it persists: the traffic keeps arriving after the work stops, unlike advertising which stops the day the budget does. The trade is that it compounds slowly, and results arrive months after the effort.

Scale without substance is now actively penalised. Publishing large numbers of near-identical pages is classified as scaled content abuse and can affect an entire site, not only the pages involved.

In practice

An article answering one specific question well can bring steady traffic for years; fifty pages differing by one word bring none and can harm the rest of the site.

Common mistake

Chasing volume of pages. Since 2024 a large set of thin pages is a site-level risk, not a neutral experiment.
