A handle is the unique username identifying an account on a platform, usually written with a leading @.
A handle is both an address and a name. It routes mentions and profile URLs, and it is read as identity — which is why the same handle across platforms is worth real effort to secure, even on platforms you do not yet use.
Handles are scarce and mostly non-transferable, so the practical advice is to claim early and keep it stable. Changing one breaks every existing mention, link and screenshot pointing at the old name, and platforms often release the abandoned handle to someone else.
Squatting handles to resell them is prohibited by most platform terms, and dormant handles are frequently reclaimed.
In practice
Securing the same handle on six platforms at once, before launch, costs an hour and avoids a permanent mismatch between your name and your addresses.
Common mistake
Changing a handle for a rebrand without redirects. Old links break silently and keep sending traffic to a stranger.
