Verification badge

Also called verified, blue check

A verification badge is a platform marker next to an account name, historically confirming identity and now often available by subscription.

The meaning changed and the symbol did not. Badges originally signalled that a platform had confirmed a notable account was genuine; on several platforms they now largely indicate a paid subscription, which some bundle with additional reach.

That shift matters for how much weight to give it. As a trust signal to an audience it is weaker than it was; as a practical benefit it may still be worth the fee where it comes with distribution or support advantages.

Impersonation protection remains the durable argument. For a creator whose name is being copied, a verified account is the fastest way for an audience to tell which one is real.

In practice

Where a badge comes bundled with reach advantages, the subscription is an advertising decision rather than a credibility one.

Common mistake

Buying a badge expecting credibility. Audiences increasingly read it as a subscription, and a real body of work signals more.
