Engagement rate is the share of an audience that interacted with a post — likes, comments, shares, saves — relative to followers or reach.
There is no single formula, and that is the most important thing to know about it. Divide by followers and you measure how much of your audience you still reach; divide by reach and you measure how compelling the post was to whoever saw it. Brands and creators frequently quote the two at each other without noticing they differ.
Engagement rate falls as an account grows, mechanically. A larger following contains more people who followed for one post two years ago, so the denominator inflates faster than genuine interest. A 100,000-follower account at 2% and a 3,000-follower account at 8% may reach a similar number of interested humans.
Saves and shares carry more weight than likes on most platforms, because they predict future distribution rather than past approval.
In practice
A post reaching 40,000 accounts with 2,400 interactions has 6% engagement on reach — and 1.2% if the creator has 200,000 followers. Both numbers are correct.
Common mistake
Quoting engagement rate in a media kit without stating the denominator. Any brand that checks will assume the flattering formula was chosen on purpose.
