A bento grid is a layout of tiles of different sizes arranged in a single grid, named after the compartmented Japanese lunch box.
Every element sits in a rectangle, rectangles vary in size, and the whole set locks into one grid without gaps. Size carries meaning: a tile occupying four cells reads as more important than one occupying a single cell, without any label saying so.
The pattern spread through product marketing pages around 2022 and reached creator profiles shortly after, because it solves a specific problem — showing several unrelated things at once without ranking them into a list. A vertical list forces a first, a second and a third. A grid lets a shop, a video and a booking form coexist as peers.
It works because it is dense without being uniform. The failure case is a grid of identical squares, which is a table wearing different clothes.
In practice
A profile where a square holds a portrait, a wide tile embeds the latest track, and two small tiles hold Instagram and a booking link — read in one glance, no scrolling.
Common mistake
Making every tile the same size. The grid then carries no hierarchy, and the visitor's eye has nowhere to start.
