Also called editorial calendar
A content calendar is the plan of what gets published where and when, usually held far enough ahead to survive a bad week.
Its real function is protection against the blank page. Deciding what to post on the day it must go out produces the safest, most forgettable version of whatever comes to mind; deciding two weeks ahead lets ideas be chosen rather than found.
A calendar also makes gaps visible. Four weeks of the same theme, or a launch with nothing supporting it, is obvious in a grid and invisible in a stream of individual decisions.
Detail is the trap. A calendar listing dates, themes and formats gets maintained; one demanding finished captions and hashtags per slot is abandoned within a month and then trusted by nobody.
In practice
Two weeks of planned themes plus a rolling list of raw ideas outlasts a perfectly detailed month that stops being updated on day nine.
Common mistake
Planning so far ahead that nothing timely fits. A calendar with no empty slots cannot react to anything happening now.
