Also called FYP, recommendation feed
The For You page is a feed of recommended content from accounts a viewer does not follow, selected by the platform.
Its arrival changed the economics of social media. Distribution stopped depending mainly on how many people follow you and started depending on how a given post performs with a first small test audience, which is why accounts with no following can reach hundreds of thousands.
For creators this cuts both ways. Reach is no longer gated by audience size, and it is also no longer guaranteed by it — a large following does not protect a post that the early test audience ignores.
It is the structural reason owned channels matter more, not less: reach that a system grants can be withdrawn without notice.
In practice
A first post from a 40-follower account reaching 80,000 people is normal on a recommendation feed and was impossible on a following feed.
Common mistake
Reading recommendation reach as audience growth. Most of those viewers will never see a second post unless something converts them.
